Celebrate World Whisky Day: a letter from Archie Rose

Ahead of World Whisky Day, Drinks Trade reached out to Archie Rose to learn more about what makes its whiskies unique.

Who says you can’t make the world’s best whisky with Australian malts?

Australian whisky lies at the core of Archie Rose’s global spirits ambitions and their ‘Question Everything’ approach to growing and sourcing 100% local malts, along with an individual malt stream process has created true innovation in a category that has typically followed tradition.

Both Archie Rose Single Malt Whisky (Australia’s Best Single Malt Whisky – Eight-Time Winner) and Rye Malt Whisky (World’s Best Rye Whisky – Four-Time Winner) are distinctly crafted to highlight Australian malts, each with a unique profile and character. This method enables the Archie Rose team to tailor every step of the production process, from brewing temperatures and yeast selection to cask type, distillation rates, and maturation conditions.

“We are very proud to now source 100% of our malts from Australia, mostly from our home state of NSW, supporting our belief that great whisky starts its life in the field. This also delivers sustainability benefits that result from sourcing locally versus importing ingredients,” says Archie Rose Founder Will Edwards.

“Australian whisky comes into its own due to our unique blend of available natural ingredients and climate. We grow some of the best barley in the world. We have an amazing wine industry in Australia and the casks from fortified wines (such as Tawny or Apera), not to mention table reds, make excellent casks for maturing whisky,” says Dave Withers, Master Distiller.

“When Archie Rose started distilling whisky in 2014, we wanted to understand the role that the grain plays in flavouring the whisky. What started as a few experimental distillations opened a pandora’s box of questions. We discovered that the variety and treatment of the malt really matters, and a lot more than most people think. Whether it is the flavour of biscuits, roasted nuts, amaretto, coffee, or chocolate, all those flavours come from the malt. We believe in standing behind those flavours and giving them a voice.”
