Flying Dutchman No.3 Premium Dark Rum is a new, three year old rum that’s bucking the trend in production…This is a rum, made for whisky drinkers.

No.3 has been made by the Zuidam Distillery in The Netherlands and is a relative newcomer to the Australian market, imported and distributed by Savant Spirits. It follows the successful Flying Dutchman White Rum and Flying Dutchman No.1, and Savant Spirits believe there is serious scope for the whisky-like, dark rum here.

“Zuidam Distillery’s Flying Dutchman 3yo Rum is somewhat of a labour of (brotherly) love”, Savant Spirits cofounder Ben Luzz said.

“Although Master Distiller Patrick van Zuidam prefers whisky, his brother Gilbert prefers rum, and so in 2010 Patrick embarked on making a rum more akin to whisky production. This is acutely apparent in the exclusion of any column distillation and the sole use of the copper pot still.”

Flying Dutchman No.3 has also been made with pure cane molasses sourced from Barbados and aged in three types of barrels, including re-coopered Oloroso Sherry and Pedro Ximinez (a white Spanish wine grape variety) butts, and virgin American oak casks.

Together, the pot distillation, high quality molasses and mix of wood have created a rum that blends the sweet, caramel notes of rum, with the woody, spicy, oaky nuances of whisky. On the nose, there’s banana, wood, spice, creamy toffee and dark chocolate notes, while the palate leads to mellow flavours of oak, caramel sweetness and citrus.

40% ABV/RRP $79.95.
