It took just 82 seconds for Edinburgh-based distillery Pickering's Gin to sell out of its latest batch of gin-filled Christmas baubles. An estimated 15,000 customers crashed the company’s website when the decorations – priced at $37.55 for six, each containing a double measure of gin – went on sale on Friday morning.
When customers complained about not being able to checkout, the company posted: “Despite upgrading our server to Glastonbury Tickets level, it has gone down. Apologies for the delay, we’re working on it.”
However, once the site was back up, the baubles were sold out.
Production of the baubles has jumped from 500 in 2015 to 30,000 for this year, with the company planning to make 300,000 in 2017.
Pickering's apologised on Facebook to customers who missed out on the baubles: “We’ve been genuinely taken aback with demand and interest in our gin-filled baubles. We’re a little team of nine. We vow to provide our #GinBaubles to all of our #GinFriends next year. Many thanks for your patience today. #BaubleMania.”
For those who missed out this year, the company suggests signing up to its mailing list to receive an email when the next batch of baubles becomes available for pre-order in early December.
