Award-winning Barossa winery, Grant Burge, unveils its highly anticipated annual vintage release this month, with its latest range of premium red wines.
The new releases promise the same exceptional quality and integrity that Grant Burge is world-famous for and includes the 2019 Holy Trinity Grenache Shiraz Mourvèdre and 2019 Filsell Old Vine Shiraz as well as Grant Burge Icon, 2018 Nebu Cabernet Shiraz.
The 2021 release is a nod to family occasions and a quaint reminder of Grant Burge’s rich history, dating back to 1865 with pioneer Meshach Burge, whose generosity gave birth to five generations of vignerons. His legacy is reflected in the wines today.
Grant Burge combines decades-long winemaking heritage, with unwavering focus on the land and in the vineyard. The 2021 vintage release showcases the results of superb vintage conditions, paired with remarkable terroirs and passionate, hands-on winemaking, producing wines of distinction and excellence.
The latest Grant Burge wines are already earning recognition within the global wine community. Recent accolades include the 2019 Filsell Old Vine and the 2019 Holy Trinity both receiving Silver in the 2021 Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA), scoring 90 and 92 points respectively.
Excitingly, this is the first release of the Grant Burge vintage wines with their refreshed, premium packaging. This new look is reflective of how Grant Burge continues to remain a brand that both new and existing wine drinkers alike go to for its exceptional quality and taste.
Chief Winemaker, Craig Stansborough says this year’s vintage release is the perfect illustration of what the Barossa Valley is celebrated for, generously flavoured wines, with diverse terroir and fruit expression delivering elegance, natural acidity, and great length in every bottle.
“Grant Burge wines consistently deliver the very best in premium Australian wines - and the latest vintage Filsell, Holy Trinity and Nebu are no different,” Mr Stansborough says.
The 2018 Grant Burge Nebu hails from a standout vintage in the Barossa, where dry, warm conditions, and cool night-time temperatures, produced fruit with exceptional character and flavour.
“This vintage is our third release of the Nebu wine, and the classic 2018 season was kind to both Barossa floor Cabernet and Shiraz. The Cabernet Sauvignon portion was sourced from the outstanding Cameron Vale vineyard, with the Shiraz picked from the 100-year-old Filsell vineyard adding to the pedigree of the wine,” explains Mr Stansborough.
Considered one of the oldest and finest vineyards in the Barossa Valley, the Grant Burge Filsell vineyard was planted in 1920, and produces some of the fruit for the highly acclaimed Meshach Shiraz, making the Filsell Old Vine Shiraz a soughtafter younger brother to loyal followers. The 2019 Filsell Old Vine Shiraz exemplifies the unique Barossa climate and terroir.
“With fruit sourced from near century-old vines, the Filsell vineyard is considered one of the best vineyards in the Barossa and consistently produces fruit of full of incredible intensity and concentration,” Mr Stansborough adds.
An unseasonable dry 2019 vintage, with below-average rainfall in winter, followed by a dry spring and summer, produced smaller grapes resulting in rich concentration and intensity, which can be observed in both the 2019 Filsell Old Vine and 2019 Holy Trinity.
The Holy Trinity is crafted by three traditional Barossa varieties, with a portion of the wine fermented using concrete heading boards - a traditional old-world technique to help extract rich colour and tannin.
Mr Stansborough confirms that the Holy Trinity is a staple for all Barossa wine-lovers: “One of the longest producing Barossa Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvèdre blends, this wine delivers complexity, depth and finesse with every release and the 2019 vintage is testament to this.
