Vale Phillip John sadly passed away this week.
Phillip John is remembered for his contribution to the Barossa and Hunter Valleys, as well as Tumbarumba’s growing recognition as a premium chardonnay, pinot noir and sparkling wine region.
Most notably, Phillip John is recognised for his early career at Lindeman’s, where he was responsible for one of Australia’s first successes in the US and UK with Lindeman’s Bin 65 Chardonnay. Phillip John then went on to take the reins at Hungerford Hill as Chief Winemaker, where he remained until 2008 when he retired due to ill health. Phillip John was responsible for growing Hungerford Hill into great fruition, as well as its successful portfolio of cool climate wines, produced with local growers of the Tumbarumba region.
Hungerford Hill’s outstanding success with these wines are a testament to Phillip John’s vision and persistence. He will be sorely missed by all his friends in the Australian wine industry.
