The Gospel have released their second single cask release, Single Cask #147, their first whiskey to officially celebrate the Brunswick neighbourhood.
The Gospel is renowned for their stringent single cask selections, the direct result of its fanatical pursuit for bold, distinct, yet perfectly balanced whiskey. Combing through their barrel catalogue of hundreds of casks, sampling each one, this special release stood out due to its impeccable qualities.
It is the first of their releases made from 100 per cent Brunswick distillate, having been distilled, matured and bottled solely in their inner-city Brunswick warehouse. It is a delicate whiskey that showcases the best of their bond store.
“Our previous releases all started their lives at our old South Melbourne warehouse, eventually making their way over to the northside,” says Andrew Fitzgerald, Co-Founder of The Gospel.
“We’re proud to be a part of the Brunswick community, so it’s humbling to release a product made entirely from beginning to end in this neighbourhood.”
Single Cask #147 is a heavily toasted, 30-month, air-dried single barrel of double pot distilled 100 per cent Rye Whiskey. Resting high in the bond store, the cask absorbed three Melbourne summers exposed to the greatest temperature variation within the distillery, having spent its entire life on the top rack of their two-storey barrel rack.
The cask was coopered from timber sourced from the Ozark region of the United States, with the barrel profile specifically developed as part of The Gospel’s ongoing R&D program for the International Stave Company.
Single Cask #147 is rich with stone fruits of apricot and peach, spun toffee, freshly cut timber and bright green apple on the nose. A long palate of warm melting butter, dark chocolate and cocoa with a spicy backbone. White pepper and peach ice tea to finish. Medium bodied with a plump and sumptuous mouthfeel.
“Each year we go on a mission to find the top 10-20 barrels from our bond store. Usually, our tasting team of five end up enjoying different samples more than others, but the overwhelming consensus is Cask #147 stood out the most – it’s a unicorn cask,” says Mr Fitzgerald.
“Everything about the cask is unique – the backstory, the flavour, the maturation. It’s truly magical.”
Enjoyed neat or on the rocks, Single Cask #147 is best shared in the company of family and friends.
Limited to 300 bottles, the release has an RRP of $150, well below other limited whiskey releases from Australia, making it a deliciously premium but affordable whiskey.
Exclusively available to purchase online now from The Gospel Whiskey. The release will join the brand’s core range, Solera Rye and Straight Rye Whiskey. It follows their last sold-out limited project release, Blackhearts & Sparrows.
