DNA Distillery has teamed up with the warehouse dwellers of Baba’s Place to introduce the world’s first Rakija & Tonic in a can.

Taking the RTD to a new level, co-founders of the DNA Distillery and cousins, James Projcevski and Monique Sutevski created their Dedo’s (Grandfather’s) favourite Rakija recipe, mixed it with tonic and packaged it in a convenient, recyclable can.

James and Monique are part of a Macedonian family residing in Sydney who have been making rakija for five generations. They started recreating their family's spirit during the lockdown in 2020 as a project of passion and now the cousins want to share it in a convenient and modern format.

Rakija (pronounced ra-ki-ya) is produced from fermented and distilled fruit or a double-distilled fruit brandy and is popular in the Balkans in Eastern Europe and is the national drink of Serbia. The first evidence of Rakija dates back to 11th-century Bulgaria. It is usually served in a shot glass intended to be sipped slowly in order to enjoy its complex flavours.

Rakija is commonly distilled from plum or quince, DNA Distillery Rakija has taken a distinctly Australian twist and made its local Rakija from ripe, full-bodied Australian Shiraz grapes, fermented and double-distilled with an alcohol content of 40 %.

Distilled in small batches in a special distil from Poland, the DNA Rakija is made with traditional processes, a legacy of their ancestors, passed down from generation to generation, from Europe to Australia.

“Our Dedo’s recipe was so famous in the village that people would travel by foot for the chance to taste it,” says Monique Sutevski.

“We are so thrilled to be the world’s first to launch our Rakija & Tonic in a can and feel this is the perfect beverage for any party, family gathering, or event.”

DNA Distillery Rakija Cans are available in a 4-pack for $29.00; a 16-pack for $109.00 through the DNA Distillery website www.dnadistillery.com
