Australian Grape & Wine has been awarded a $1.8m grant by the Australian government to support the expansion of export markets around the world.
Minister for Agriculture and Northern Australia David Littleproud said the funding would build on the successes already achieved by the organisation in expanding export market opportunities in Japan and South Korea. AGW was awarded a $998K grant in 2021 to target these markets.
“Australian wine is recognised among the best in the world—expanding our markets will see demand for our premium product grow across the globe,” Minister Littleproud said.
“The funding will help to improve market access, tackle trade barriers and generate growth in key target export markets including established markets such as the United States, Canada, United Kingdom and new and emerging markets across Southeast Asia, India and Scandinavia.
Australian Grape & Wine CEO, Tony Battaglene said, “We’re going to build consumer understanding of Australian wine through expanding promotion; improving trade and market access; and initiating a long-term strategic collaboration with India to enable the future potential of that market to be realised and support broader trade relations,” Mr Battaglene said.
He applauded the government's support in helping winemakers and grape growers to diversify their export opportunities in a competitive global market.
AGW intends to continue to build opportunities in Japan and South Korea, address persistent trade and market access barriers in export markets and sees India as a long-term priority.
“The potential of the Indian market is significant and we will undertake a range of activities to engage with Indian grape growers and winemakers, along with government officials and technical experts, to share knowledge, build relationships and grow the wine category in India," he said.
