The all-new awards will showcase the growth and interest in Italian varietal wines in Australia, while providing a unique forum to raise the profile of Italian cultivars amongst consumers.
2016 marks 100 years since Italians first settled in Griffith. Since then, the Italian population has had major influence on the region’s cultural development.
It is in celebration of this connection that the Riverina Winemakers Association is launching the Australian Italian Wine Awards to be judged for the first time on 6 September.
“This is an exciting development in Australia’s wine industry awards calendar, a niche component to the broader Riverina show, which both anticipates our future and acknowledges our past,” said Chair of Judges Sophie Otton.
Other judges include Mark Protheroe, Group Head Sommelier at Grossi Restaurant group, Sue Hodder, Senior Winemaker at Wynn’s Coonawarra and Lucy Clements, Head of Sourcing at Coles Liquor Group.
Entries open 20 June and close 22 July with results announced 30 September.
