South Australian, family-owned wine and spirits business, Angove Family Winemakers, is celebrating its 130th anniversary.

Angove Family Winemakers was founded in 1886 by Dr. William Angove, who began making wine on the property as a tonic for his patients. Today, the business produces the famous St Agnes brandies and is well known for its single vineyard and organic wines.

The business is currently led by fourth generation family member, John Angove, together with his children Victoria, Richard and Sophie (photoed above), who each have an idea of what the future of the business looks like.

"It is really important to recognise the enormously hard work our father John has made over many years, not to mention our Grandfather, Great Grandfather and his father before him, as well as the fantastic team we have at the winery and around Australia," Victoria said. "We feel though, that we are younger than we have ever been and have incredible opportunities ahead of us. It is exciting and a great feeling that our best winemaking is still in front of us."

Richard says the Warboys Vineyard in McLaren Vale will play an important role for Angove Family Winemakers in the coming years. The historic vineyard consists of 33 acres of old shiraz and grenache vines, as well as new plantings of carignan and the Italian white variety fiano.

Richard also wishes for the business to continue to practice organic and bio-dynamic winemaking, something his father has pioneered during his career.

"For us, organics is all about sustainable farming and soil health. At the end of the day, grapes derive their flavour from the soil in which they grow. Our aim is to have the healthiest soil we possibly can; this means grapes of the highest flavour and wines that speak of where they are grown," Richard explained.
