Sydney cocktail bar Maybe Sammy is the only Australian bar to be named as one of the The World’s 50 Best Bars for 2019.
With a ranking of #43, Maybe Sammy was awarded Best Bar in Australasia and joins an illustrious group of bars from cities including Rome, London, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Milan.
Only nine months old, Maybe Sammy has already collected several national and international bar awards including Best International New Cocktail Bar at the 2019 Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Awards (held in New Orleans) and Best Cocktail Bar, Bar Team of the Year and NSW Cocktail Bar of the Year at the 2019 Australian Bar Awards (held in Sydney).
In addition to The World’s 50 Best Bars list, the organisation also publishes the extended 51-100 list which included four Australian bars in 2019: Bulletin Place (Sydney) at #66, The Baxter Inn (Sydney) at #79, Black Pearl (Melbourne) at #80 and new entry PS40 (Sydney) at #95.
Co-owned by Stefano Catino, Vince Lombardo and Andrea Gualdi, Maybe Sammy is located in The Rocks, Sydney. It’s the second venue for Catino and Lombardo, who also own Maybe Frank pizzeria and cocktail bar in Surry Hills and Randwick, Sydney.
Catino, who was in London to receive the accolade alongside Maybe Sammy bartender Martin Hudak, said: “We are blown away that Maybe Sammy has been so well received by our national and international peers. To be named as one of The World’s Best 50 Bars is such an honour, especially within our first year.
"We had a clear vision for Maybe Sammy and are very grateful to our amazing team for bringing it to life. We really couldn’t have done it without them.”
The World’s 50 Best Bars is an annual list that celebrates the best of the international drinks industry. It provides an annual ranking of bars as voted by more than 500 drinks experts from across the world, including renowned bartenders and consultants, drinks writers and cocktail specialists.
The list, which has been published annually since 2009, represents the ultimate international guide to the world’s top bars and drinking destinations and has become the most anticipated ranking for drinks professionals and cocktail aficionados across the world.
The Academy of voters are spread across the globe with the distribution of voters designed to reflect the relative development and sophistication of the drinks sector, and the concentration of quality bars in each region. 150 are based in Europe; 140 in North and Central America; 40 in South America; 115 in Asia; 35 in Africa and the Middle East; and 30 in Australasia.
The World's Best Bar for 2019 was Dante in New York.
