This year the awards received a record number of 15,929 entries from 48 countries, and out of the 35 international trophies awarded, Australia took home an impressive five.
Praised for being the best in their varietal categories, the wines representing Australia’s 2015 winning five included:
2014 Bay of Fires Sauvignon Black – Tasmania
2009 Leasingham Classic Clare Riesling – South Australia
2013 Longview Epitome Late Harvest Riesling – South Australia
2008 McWilliam’s 1877 – Cross-regional blend
2013 Sidewood Mappinga Shiraz – South Australia
Australia’s strong presence was also recognised by judges in the regional category - where 9 trophies were claimed, and the wider category – where 19 gold medals were further awarded to Bay of Fires and Leasingham, as well as House of Arras, Houghton and Brookland Value.
