Canstar Blue has conducted its first-ever liquor retailers review, revealing the off-premise outlets Australians prefer.

The financial comparison website surveyed more than 2000 Australians for their feedback on the liquor retailers they purchased alcohol from (in-store or online) in the last three months.

Retailers were compared and rated on the range of products on offer, price compared to other retailers, deals and specials available, layout of their store and website, customer service and overall satisfaction.

The survey showed respondents spend an average of $44 a week at their local. For more than half of people (52%), the weekly shopping list for alcohol usually stays the same. Wine was the most common drink purchased by respondents (61%), followed by beer (59%) and spirits (47%), including pre-mixed options.

Australia's top 5 liquor retailers

Dan Murphy’s came out on top in the Canstar Blue survey. The chain was the only entry featured in the ratings to earn five stars for overall satisfaction, and also scored full marks for its range of products on offer, prices compared to other retailers, special deals available, customer service and overall satisfaction. It got four stars for the layout of its stores and website.

Dan Murphy's noted: "A huge win for Dan’s. What an amazing achievement and congratulations to our entire team."

Here are the best liquor retailers in Australia, as rated by consumers in Canstar Blue’s review:

  1. Dan Murphy’s
  2. First Choice Liquor
  3. BWS
  4. Liquorland
  5. Cellarbrations

First Choice Liquor came in second best on four stars for overall satisfaction, but clearly impressed with full marks for its special deals and customer service. It also got the edge over this year’s winner when it came to the layout of its stores and website.

The remaining retailers ended with three stars overall, although BWS and Cellarbrations managed to bump up their scores for customer service.
