This week, Melbourne venue Caretaker’s Cottage has been crowned as the recipient of the Michter’s Art of Hospitality Award, the second of two special awards in The World’s 50 Best Bars 2024 competition announced in the lead up to the Top 50 countdown.

With the award being established as a way to recognise the importance of hospitality in the overall bar experience, Caretaker’s Cottage was selected by the 700+ anonymous industry experts that form part of The World’s 50 Best Bars Academy as being the location at which they had experienced the best hospitality in the past 18 months.

“This is a very well-deserved win, and we extend our heartfelt congratulations to the entire Caretaker’s Cottage team,” said Emma Sleight, Head of Content for The World’s 50 Best Bars.

“While the drinks themselves are second to none, the authentically warm, laid-back atmosphere provides a home away from home for guests, creating an unrivalled and utterly memorable drinking experience.”

Caretaker’s Cottage was Co-Founded by Rob Libecans, Ryan Noreiks and Matt Stirling in 2022 in Wesley Place, Melbourne, in a venue that was once the home of a church caretaker.

In last year’s competition, Caretaker’s Cottage ranked as the 23rd best bar in the world.

“The Michter’s Art of Hospitality Award encompasses everything we strive for, and we are stoked to be recognised this year,” said the three owners in a statement.

“To operate Caretaker’s Cottage in Melbourne, and to host people in our tiny pub from all over the world, is truly the greatest honour… We’re so proud to have created a fun and inclusive environment that guests enjoy as much as we do. We can’t wait to share the news with everyone, as this award wouldn’t have been possible without our community.”

The award will be presented at a live ceremony taking place in Madrid, Spain, at the time of the Top 50 countdown on 22 October.

Iain McPherson named Bartenders’ Bartender

Also announced ahead of the countdown was the recipient of the Altos Bartenders’ Bartender Award, as voted by the bartenders on this year’s The World’s 50 Best Bars 2024 list. For 2024, the accolade was won by Iain McPherson of Ediburgh’s Panda & Sons.

“I am overwhelmingly full of gratitude to be named this year’s Altos Bartenders’ Bartender,” said McPherson.

“How meaningful it is to be nominated by the people that I look up to and admire daily – a true honour. Awards, especially one like this, are never truly an ‘individual’ effort but a reflective accolade of the creative, collaborative, driven and passionate team at Panda & Sons.”
