Chinese Baijui brands have dominated the 2017 Brand Finance Spirits Report, scoring four of the top 10 spots.

Baijiu now accounts for 37.5% of total global spirits values, up from 23% in 2016. Baijiu now has a collective value of more than $US22billion.

Brand Finance calculates “value” based on business assets that can be bought, sold and licensed; brand strength, brand revenues and future sales post-tax.

Heading the list again this year was Moutai, which saw a 60% increase in sales to $US11.5million.

There were concerns that the Chinese government crackdown on gift-giving would affect Moutai's sales and ranking, but Brand Finance noted: “However, the gap has been filled by individual consumers and private enterprise. Demand is now stronger than ever, with the price of a bottle recently rising to 1,200 yuan.

“Moutai is even tentatively expanding outside China, celebrating the one year anniversary of Moutai Day in San Francisco in 2016 as well as launching in Germany.”

Other fast movers on the list were Yanghe, which moved from fourth to third place; Luzhou Laojiao, which was up from ninth to sixth; and Wuliangye jumping from 14th to ninth.

Wuliangye, Luzhou Laojiao and Yanghe grew by 86%, 73% and 50% respectively.

“These rates of growth support existing evidence to suggest that consumers are trading up to more premium baijius,” said Brand Finance.

However, whisky value share shrank from 37% to 28%, with Johnnie Walker - in the number 2 spot - seeing its value slip 2% from $US4.6billion to $UUS4.5billion.
