The Daniel Pontifex Memorial Trust and Wine Australia are on the look out for the next rising talent from Australia's hospitality industry to award the Daniel Pontifex Scholarship to. The scholarship will give one lucky applicant the opportunity to work in some of London's best restaurants as well as visit a number of wine regions.

The scholarship recognises the late Daniel Pontifex, who sadly passed away in a car accident while working at Kensington Place Restaurant in London. Daniel had also previously worked in Adelaide with Michael Hill Smith AM MW, and so in 1998 Daniel's family and Mr. Hill Smith came together to found the Trust in his memory.

Each year, the scholarship goes to either an Australian or UK applicant, alternating between the two. This year the scholarship will be awarded to an Australian applicant, having gone to UK recipient Quinby Frey in 2015.

The scholarship was last awarded in Australia in 2014, to Alexander Kirkwood, who now works as Assistant Head Sommelier at Quay in Sydney.

Kirkwood said this of his experience: "The scholarship had an immediate impact on my career. My London experience was both inspiring and educational, and the networking opportunities have proved invaluable."

Reviewing applications to the scholarship this year are Aaron Brasher, David LeMire MW and Mr. Hill Smith. The winner will receive funding towards travel, insurance, accommodation and expenses.

To enter, applicants must submit a short essay (500 words) explaining why they are a suitable candidate, together with an abridged biography. Applicants are expected to have a strong interest in wine and may work in any area of hospitality.

Submissions should be made by email to scholarship@wineaustralia.com by Friday 29 July 2016. Interviews for shortlisted candidates will take place in September and October.
