Apollo Bay Distillery has successfully recovered bottles of hand sanitiser that it incorrectly labelled as gin.
The Victorian distillery issued a product recall on Monday after nine SS Casino Dry Gin 700ml bottles were accidentally filled with hand sanitiser. The bottles were sold at the Great Ocean Road Brewhouse from June 5-7, 2020.
"We can now confirm we have recovered all incorrectly labelled bottles from the product safety recall we issued on Monday 8 June," the distillery said.
"We are very sorry this occurred. Rest assured we will be following up our procedures to ensure this does not occur again.
"We’d like to thank those who were affected for being so understanding. We are in the process of fully refunding and providing a replacement product to those impacted."
According to the recall notice, the bottles contain 1.45% glycerol, 0.125 per cent hydrogen peroxide, which are commonly used in cleaning agents and hand sanitiser.
"Products containing glycerol and hydrogen peroxide may cause illness/injury if consumed. Purchasers have been warned to not drink the gin as consumption could lead to serious side effects including nausea, headaches, dizziness, bloating, vomiting, thirst and diarrhoea."
Many alcohol brands began producing hand sanitiser during the COVID-19 outbreak due to a shortage of the product.
