The East Village Sydney re-opened last month after a major interior overhaul. Two of the three spaces, the Public Bar and Athletic Club, are now open to the public, with the third space, the Terrace, due to open early next week.

Purchased in April 2016, East Village Sydney marks the second pub to the Goodtime Hospitality Group, co-founded by James Bodel and Locky Paech.

Located on the corner of Palmer and Liverpool streets in Darlinghurst, the four-story, 100-year-old heritage site has been home to some of Sydney’s most infamous pub carnations, including the notorious 1920s dive, Tradesman’s Arms ‘The Bloodhouse’.

The Public Bar, also affectionately referred to as the “Wine-pub”, features a list of cellar wines by glass, thanks to a clever stock system. As a bottle of cellar wine is opened, a light bulb is illuminated beside it to mark its availability. When the bottle is finished, the light turns off and the next selections are made. “It’s a great way to try some wines you might not normally have the opportunity to.” Paech said.

The Athletic Club is a modern concept sports bar. Far from the regular TAB room, the space has been designed with an old-world feel, with bespoke poker tables and private bottle lockers. “It’s styled completely differently to the other two spaces within the pub and it’s like you’ve walked into another era.” Paech said.

A defining feature of the Athletic Club is its private room, which patrons can book out in advance to watch their favourite sporting matches uninterrupted.

East Village’s rooftop space, the Terrace, is scheduled to open next week and will provide breath-taking views of the city skyline. Designed as an all-weather rooftop bar, the Terrace setting will have a relaxed atmosphere, with fresh dishes from a variety of influences.

“It has beautiful views back over the Sydney CBD. You’ll be hard-pressed to beat it as a spot to kick back and share some plates with friends and have a few drinks.” Paech said.

The opening of the Terrace will fulfill Goodtime Hospitality Group’s goal to create a venue with something for everyone, locals and destination explorers alike.

“Establishing ourselves a "go to" venue to drink cocktails in the sun, watch sport and drink wine is our immediate plan. We build venues for longevity. We want to develop the product into something that lasts the test of time.” Paech said.

The Group is also working on its West Village venue, with a new cafe offering in the beer garden and an on-site distillery coming in 2017.
