World Whisky Day is just around the corner - this Saturday to be precise - unleashing the biggest celebration of the "water of life" around the globe. As thousands get ready to fill their glasses, we thought we'd put forward a few recommendations of some of the best whiskies to cheers to.
Glen Grant 10 Year Old (RRP $59.99, distributed by Campari Australia)
This 10 Year Old Single Malt brings an added intensity to Glen Grant's familiar orchard fruits. With a rich hue of golden barley, the whisky leads you in with balanced aromas of ripe orchard fruits. Soft, creamy and fruity flavours linger in the mouth with an almond finish. Matured in bourbon casks, this is a gentle, elegant Speyside single malt with hints of hazelnut.
Chivas Regal Extra (RRP $73, distributed by Pernod Ricard Australia)
Created from an exceptional blend of rare whiskies and aged in sherry casks from Oloroso in Spain. The secret to Chivas Regal Extra's generous flavour lies with the rich sweetness of the Spanish sherry reacting with the oak wood of the cask. The result is a whisky that's both deep in aroma, rich in fruitiness and generous in sweetness.
Glenfiddich 15 Year Old (RRP $115, distributed by William Grant & Sons Australia)
Glenfiddich's 15 Year Old expression is a truly special single malt that exemplifies the distillery's family tradition of innovation. Aged in European, American and new American oak to carefully release the virgin cask flavours, the whisky is then mellowed in Glenfiddich's unique Solera vat before being married in Portuguese oak tuns. The 15 Year Old was the first to enter the top ten best selling single malts in the world.
Writers Tears The Irishman (RRP $71.99, distributed by island2island Beverage Company)
This Irishman Single Malt is one of only a handful of Irish triple distilled single malts on the market. On the nose you find ripe and fruity notes with luscious peach, dried apricot and tropical fruits as well as hints of orange blossom and vanilla fudge. On the palate, there's vanilla sweetness, granola, toasted almonds and honey; a little oak, digestive biscuits, apricots and a hint of coca. The Irishman Single Malt boasts an impressive medal haul both in Europe and the USA for its outstanding quality.
Canadian Club 20 Year Old (RRP $85.99, distributed by Beam Suntory)
Canadian Club 20 Year Old is aged for two decades and is a flagship of the Canadian Club range. A favourite in cocktail bars with an extraordinary complexity and depth, it is comprised of woody notes of soft oak, sweet rye spices and hot pepper, best savoured on the rocks.
