With only one week left of Tequila Herradura’s 12-week incentive program in Australia, multi-venue bar and restaurant Mejico, located in both Miranda and Sydney is running the last of its tequila master classes, aiming to re-educate consumers on the versatility of tequila and win a once in a lifetime trip to Mexico in July.

Partnering with the brand earlier in April, the aim of the program is to showcase the unique complexity of Herradura in long drinks and when sipped, moving the category away from shot consumption. Mejico was presented with an individual incentive target and over the last 12 weeks has been offering premium flights of Herradura in master classes with every table to secure a ticket to visit the original Casa Herradura Hacienda.

Tequila is a spirit close to Mejico’s heart, dedicating an entire menu in both of its locations to 100 per cent agave flights. Each flight comes with the option of being paired with Verdita or Sangrita and is categorised by region – Highland, Valley, Guadalajara, Guanajuato and Michoacan.

Mejico also takes pride in ensuring all its dishes replicate regional flavours and techniques. Placing a modern twist on Mexican cuisine, Mejico uses local and seasonal fresh produce, sourced using a market-to-table approach. While what’s on the menu can differ depending on availability, its signature dishes guarantee guacamole (smashed table side), corn lollipos, lamb adobo and churros.

As part of the partnership, Mejico, along with the other 11 participating venues also selected and purchased their own barrel of Herradura “Double Barrel” Reposado Tequila. Not only will the exclusive expression arrive at Mejico later this year, but if the venue beats the other participating bars by exceeding its individual target, the team will also win the actual oak barrel that was used in the secondary ageing process of the Double Barrel Reposado, as well as a second ticket on the trip.

To find out how Mejico will be serving the Australian Casa Select when it joins their back bar later this year and what it means to be one of very few to select and purchase their own barrel, drinks bulletin spoke with Bar Manager, Josh Metcalfe.

drinks bulletin: What does it mean to you to be one of very few bars to be able to select and purchase your own unique barrel of Herradura “Double Barrel” Reposado tequila?

Josh Metcalfe: It's an excellent opportunity for Mejico! We feel lucky to be a part of it and are grateful to be able to share and showcase this experience with Mejico guests. This will be a truly unique tequila and one that they can only get in very few venues across Australia, so we're excited that Mejico is a part of it.

DB: What is it about the Herradura brand and/or history that resonates with you?

JM: Old world principles, combined with new age technologies to bring a spirit, generations in the making, into the modern world. It’s something we can talk to Mejico guests about for hours, over a tequila or two?

DB: How have you been introducing your customers to Herradura during the incentive program?

JM: By bringing small tequila master classes to each and every table at Mejico, as well as through our Herradura Premium Flights - offering small serves of Plata, Reposado, Añejo and Seleccion Suprema, together with a side of Verdita and Sangrita to truly showcase the complexity and range of Herradura to Mejico guests.

DB: And how will you be serving the ‘Australian Casa Select’ – Barrel 787 at your venue when it arrives?

JM: Neat…with a good story about its origin on the side.
