"Bill will be fondly remembered by all and we are indebted to him for his significant contribution to the history of our company, for keeping the brewery going in difficult years, and for maintaining its independence", Coopers said in its statement.
"With the assistance of Maxwell and others, he steered the company through challenging times and helped to set the brewery up for the successes, which we have enjoyed over the past 20 years."
Bill Cooper was a respected and valued 4th generation patriarch of the Cooper family and business. He commenced his working life as a farmer and following the death of his older brother Bob, he started work at Coopers on 2 February, 1960. He was responsible for marketing and sales from 1965 to 1985 and was appointed Director and Secretary of the company in 1969. Bill became Managing Director in 1977, the position he held until his retirement in January 2002. He remained a Director of Coopers until 2009.
The family has said that they would like anyone wishing to honour Bill's memory to make a donation to his chosen charity, the Coopers Brewery Foundation.
