Over fifty Industry experts shared insights with 500 industry members at the first-ever Global Sustainable Wine (SWR) Roundtable Conference.
The Sustainable Wine Roundtable is a unique coalition and the only global, independent roundtable to include all stakeholders in the wine sector, working together to define sustainable wine in practical detail and develop an international wine sustainability standard.
The inaugural SWR Conference took place via Zoom and addressed key topics such as reducing the carbon footprint of the wine industry. It also raised the issue of benchmarking current sustainable wine standards and communicating to the consumer the ‘how and why’ sustainable wine is different. Other topics discussed included how the industry drives demand for sustainable wine while ensuring proper treatment of workers across the wine sector. It also takes a holistic view of wine sustainability while prioritizing key issues for individual businesses.
The SWR has solidified its governance structure and is currently working on aligning members for action research to develop practical tools. It is benchmarking existing regional standards and certifications to analyze gaps and overlaps and consulting with members so that the SWR's work is as relevant and valuable to smaller and larger producers as it will be to retailers, distributors, importers, and eventually consumers.
"There’s an urgent and growing need for effective collaboration mechanisms to enable wine sustainability across the value chain,” said Toby Webb, Co-Founder of the SWR.
"We (the SWR) look forward to the journey, and our members are already working with us to drive efficiencies and create innovations to meet the challenges of today and the future."
