A new beer has landed on Australian shores all the way from the Cyclades islands of Greece. Producers of the beer say their new brew finally offers the Australian and in particular Australian Greek population a category of beer not previously fulfilled.
Nissos is an unpasteurised, full-bodied artisanal pilsner, infused with a combination of specialty barley malts, aromatic hops and yeast to recreate flavours reminiscent of the Mediterranean.
The beer has been created using local produce from the Greek islands as part of a regional investment. Founders Alexandros Kouris, Maya Tsokli, Elina and Costis Dallas hope the beer will put the country on the world map for premium beers.
Founders of Clyclades Microbrewery also believe that this new beer is perfectly suited to the Australian market and offers the Greek population of Australia a category of beer that has not yet been available.
“We noticed that there was a gap in the Australian market for quality, artisanal, craft beer. Understanding that Australia, and Melbourne in particular, holds the largest Greek population, second to Greece itself, it was an obvious next step for the brand”, Kouris explained.
The beer has a spicy herbal-citrusy fragrant aroma with subtle malt flavours and a pleasant hoppy finish. Nissos also recently took out the Silver Bohemian-Style Pilsner 2014 Awards at the European Beer Competition in Bavaria, Germany.
Initially the beer will be stocked at all Nick’s Restaurant and Bar venues in Sydney through Beverage Imports, but will be rolled out into the wider on-premise over the next twelve months.
Nissos will retail for approximately $9 per bottle and $8.50 on tap.
