The annual Halliday Wine Companion Australian Cabernet Challenge will feature as an extension of Langton's Margaret River Wine Show this year in a bid to resurrect the varietal's presence in Australia.
The two competitions will run alongside one another from 31 October to 3 November 2016 and will give Australian producers the opportunity to showcase their cabernet offerings on a national and global stage.
James Halliday AM said that cabernet has seen a number of declines over the last few years, falling from 319,955 tonnes in 2004 to 202,672 tonnes in 2015.
"The silver lining is that much of the drop was of commercial grade grapes, and that there is a rapidly emerging shortage as the Chinese dragon roars for even more of our best cabernet. So the Halliday Wine Companion Australian Cabernet Challenge, of which I am happily the Patron, comes at a crucial time, and I urge producers everywhere who are proud of their cabernet to support this challenge," Halliday said.
Langton's, the naming rights partner of the Margaret River Wine Show also said that the challenge would provide a unique platform to showcase Australia's best cabernet sauvignons on.
As per other years, producers will be able to enter their wines into the Margaret River Wine Show for the chance to win well-recognised trophies such as the Best Red Wine of Show, Best White Wine of Show and International Judge's Trophy.
Both competitions will move to the Wyndham Resort in Dunsborough to accomodate the increase in number of entries and will continue to be held there for the next three years.
Edward Tomlinson of Lenton Brae and Margaret River Wine Association Chair said, “We trust wine producers of varietal and blended cabernet sauvignon throughout Australia will find the creation of the annual Halliday Wine Companion Australian Cabernet Challenge of great interest. The Margaret River Wine Association looks forward to showcasing on a national and global stage the depth and breadth of Australia’s finest regional cabernet offerings.”
