Kollaras & Co brands have picked up 21 awards at the Melbourne International Wine Competition.

The 2019 Melbourne International Wine Competition was held at the RACV City Club in the heart of Melbourne.

This year’s judging panel included buyers from top retail stores, sommeliers, distributors, and importers from Australia and the greater Asia Pacific Region. Judges are instructed to only grant awards or medals to wines that they would import, distribute, buy or sell themselves.

There were 1000 submissions from more than 10 countries and judges were thrilled by the high quality of known wine brands submitted as well as the large number of new wineries looking to break into the Asia Pacific Market.

"This brings Kollaras & Co's 2019 medal tally to 41 medals with another 13 wine shows still to be awarded this year," Georgia Kollaras told the Illawarra Mercury.

"Our family is beyond proud of our committed staff who work so hard to produce and source wine of outstanding quality and value for consumers. To say we are appreciative of their efforts is an understatement. To think these achievements are coming out of a humble business based in Wollongong is something we can all be proud of".

Kollaras described the family run Wollongong business as a "think global work local" business.

"It is an honour to represent our region on the world stage," she said.

Early success for Mo-Town

Kollaras & Co's Gold Medal win for its Mo-Town shiraz is particularly sweet considering the wine range only launched earlier this year.

Mo-Town taps into a alternative, hipster vibe to create wines "for those who value the different".

The company notes: "With the confidence only those from the heart of Australian wine country can muster, Mo-Town throws out the rule book and steps left of centre."

The wine has also attracted raves from Sam Kim at Wine Orbit, which rated it at 91 points.

He described the shiraz as "sweetly fruited and immediately appealing".

"The wine shows lifted aromas of dark plum, cranberry, vanilla, hazelnut and warm spice on the nose, followed by a succulent palate that is elegantly weighted and lingering," Kim said. "It is supple, smooth and plump, offering pristine fruit flavours together with gentle spicy complexity."

Priced at $15 a bottle, Mo-Town is available exclusively at independent bottle shops around Australia.
