Laphroaig has partnered with Adelaide’s open-flame king, Jake Kellie of arkhé, for an evening of salt, peat, and fire at Sydney’s Porteño on September 7.
The one-off Laphroaig Tales of Fire: Jake Kellie x Porteño event will give guests the chance to sample a four-course, flame-licked menu created by Kellie and Porteño’s Elvis Abrahanowicz and Ben Milgate along with three carefully selected Laphroaig-based cocktails and a tasting flight.
Inspired by the natural elements of isolated Islay that influence Laphroaig’s distinctive single malt - the salty ocean, earthy smokiness and island peat - the event will be one of the few places fans will have a chance to sample the limited-edition Francis Mallmann 17 Year Old Laphroaig, a hand-chosen selection by the Argentinian fire chef released via ballot in a limited number for €800 a bottle.
“Laphroaig Whisky is incredibly influenced by its natural environment. Place and nature are such integral parts of their story and hold great significance in how I approach my cooking, from building strong relationships with producers to embracing how to use an open flame to get the best out of the produce,” said Kellie.
Always drawn to smokey flavours, Kellie has worked at legendary fire-powered restaurants across the globe, including Burnt Ends in Singapore, when it was awarded its first Michelin Star in 2018. He won the World Young Chef of the Year Award for Southeast Asia before opening his own restaurant in 2021.
“I’ve been looking to partner with the Porteño boys for a while and am so excited Laphroaig is bringing this to life. Everything I cook in my restaurant is touched by fire in some way, even if just a kiss of char or smoke, and that’s what we’ll be bringing to Sydney,” he said.
