Born with Cerebral Palsy, for the first few years of her life, solid foods had been supplemented with prescribed whey-based formulas that were rich in sugar and dairy. But as Kate’s condition grew worse, it was clear such meal replacements weren’t providing her with the nutrition she needed and parents Richard and Michelle quickly sought to find an alternative solution.
It was in their home kitchen that the couple developed Komplete – an all natural and organic, dairy and gluten free ready-to-go nutritious shake. Made with 21 superfoods, Komplete became a lifesaver for Kate, giving her a super immune system and, as a result, improved her condition radically.
Today, Komplete is the leading plant based ready-to-drink in the world, drank by others with health issues or food allergies, as well as top sporting teams, families, shift workers, tradesmen and people stuck at their desk all day - the list goes on.
According to the brand - Kate Farms - Komplete delivers nutrition that protects, prevents and heals, “Just ask Kate”.
Now available in Australia through www.katefarms.com.au via Devirra Group www.devirra.com, drinks bulletin took the opportunity to speak with Richard to find out how Komplete is continuing to help Kate and others today.
drinks bulletin: How is Kate today?
Richard Laver: Since we developed the formula, Kate has never been back to hospital, in fact, Kate has never had more than a common cold. It’s truly remarkable.
DB: How well is Komplete selling in the US?
RL: We’re the leading plant based ready-to-drink and the fastest growing meal shake in the US. We’ve been in the Superbowl for the last two years and now we’re partnered with six NFL teams. We had no idea when we did this that it was going to go from a formula for my daughter to the Superbowl, but when you think about it, it makes sense; it’s a nutritional formula that offers the people that need it the most an easy way to consume so many superfoods at once.
DB: How did you come up with the ingredients for Komplete?
RL: Firstly we made it dairy free, because for someone like Kate who isn’t moving around a lot, dairy is very difficult to digest. So we began to look at plant-based ingredients, because they move through the body three times faster than dairy. It was also important to include dairy-free protein replacements and as many superfoods as we could, to give Kate the super immune system she needed. We then had to consider the flavour, because with such a wide mix of ingredients it wasn’t going to taste great to begin with. That’s why we came up with Vanilla Bliss, Cocoa Fudge and Jav’a Latte – flavours that could overtake those of the other ingredients, but that wouldn’t leave an after taste.
DB: What’s your philosophy behind Komplete today?
RL: We want to be able to say that we can offer something to anyone who is unable to get the nutrition they need from a meal, as well as an alternative for those who are using powders and blends.
DB: Where do you see the space for Komplete in Australia?
RL: Australia’s population consumes about 40 per cent of what America does in organics. So in the beverage business, when they see something that’s good for them, they buy it like crazy.
Since I’ve been here, we’ve been incredibly active and I’m planning on being out in Australia four times just next year. I’m going to be everywhere; my goal is to meet with anyone - hospitals, sports clubs, senior citizen homes, and tell them about my product. I want to show people that it’s an every-day product that offers all the nutrition they need in one. It’s great for those on the run or for people at work and I think that Komplete is the most comprehensive option there is in the world right now.
Komplete is available in three flavours in Australia - Vanilla Bliss, Cocoa Fudge and Jav’a Latte, retailing at $8 per 375ml serve or $95 per carton of 12.
