In July this year, Metcash, the largest independent wholesaler in Australia started relocating its Victorian food and liquor facility from its 25-year-old site at Laverton to a brand-new purpose-built distribution centre in Truganina.
This new site is the largest food and liquor Distribution Centre in Australia by footprint and will service the needs of over 4,000 independent food, liquor and quick service businesses across Victoria.
For Australian Liquor Marketers (ALM), the move was a crucial step in addressing the growing volume of business, as the previous site could no longer meet the demands of its 3500 active customers.
The new Truganina facility provides a third more space which is already being utilised to accommodate new lines for customers both on and off premise to purchase. The increased capacity also benefits suppliers, ensuring their brands are accessible to a wider range of customers.
The site also features a purpose built 1200 square metre cold storage room which will provide a home for craft beer kegs and packs. This dedicated cold storage space will support events and sporting clubs that require cold storage and cold delivery direct to the event.
ALM has a fleet of 70+ vehicles to service over 1900 customers on average each week. The expanded Truganina site will provide significantly more receipting area as well as loading space creating more efficiencies in loading and delivering.
The Southern Region GM, ALM, Jeremy Goodale said, "The new site is a game changer for both our staff and customers. We are training and onboarding new warehouse staff, with new processes and new equipment and are preparing for the busy summer trading period. We are confident that the many hours of training will enable us to better service our customers - both metro and regional."
He added "We are working with suppliers to constantly refresh our range and increase the stock holdings on site of the most popular brands to minimise any out-of-stock disruptions."
The official opening event for the new DC was held on Friday 1st November, with the ribbon cut by the Victorian State Treasurer Tim Pallas. Also in attendance were Luba Grigorovitch, State Member for Kororoit, Doug Jones, Metcash Group CEO, Grant Ramage CEO Metcash Food, Kylie Wallbridge, CEO Metcash Liquor, and David Lousick, Development Manager representing landlord Barings.
