The NSW Government has extended hotel and club trading times for upcoming special events in 2020 including Australia Day, the Australian Open tennis, State of Origin and NRL Grand Final.

Minister for Customer Service Victor Dominello said the later trading times will support major cultural and sports events that boost the NSW economy and create jobs and tourism opportunities.

“The extended trading means patrons can gather and socialise at venues later at night during and after these special events,” Dominello said.

“Almost all extensions are for events on Sundays when most hotels and clubs are restricted to standard 10pm trading.”

Venues in the Tamworth Regional local government area can open until midnight on Sunday, January 19 and Sunday, January 26 for the Tamworth country music festival.

“With many hotels, bars and clubs hosting gigs as part of the festival, the extended trading means fans can enjoy their favourite performers later at night,” Dominello said.

“The later times will also benefit fans of major sports events such as the Australian Open tennis, State of Origin and NRL Grand Final and Men’s and Women’s T20 cricket finals.

“Pubs and clubs across NSW can open later for these events so people can get together and watch all the action on big screens with their friends and family.”

The Office of the Minister said patrons staying out later in venues were reminded to consume alcohol responsibly during special events so everyone can enjoy a safe night. Local area extensions will apply for Vivid Sydney, Coonamble Rodeo and Campdraft and the Bathurst 1000 and Newcastle 500 motor sport races.

The extended trading hours do not apply to takeaway alcohol sales. Venues already approved to trade during or beyond the extended hours can operate as usual. Hotels and clubs must still comply with any individual trading restrictions or other special conditions that apply to their licences under the Liquor Act.
