Luxury British travel brand, CV Villas, has trawled through social media feeds to discover the most Instagrammable wineries around the world, crowning Boschendal in South Africa the most beautiful.
The team at CV Villas compared 200 wineries by the number of hashtags each winery had on current Instagram posts, with the most hashtags named the most beautiful.
Boschendal, just outside of Cape Town, was crowned most beautiful winery with 95,501 hashtags, followed closely by Penfolds Magill Estate in the Adelaide Hills with 94,761 hashtags and Castello Di Amorosa in California with 88,784 hashtags.
Penfolds Magill Estate is Australia’s oldest winery, founded by Dr Christopher and Mary Penfold in 1844. The pioneering couple planted their vine cuttings from England, initially specialising in sherry and port, then claret and riesling.
Now the winery boasts five vineyards growing various grape varieties, including Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, and (according to Instagram) visitors are particularly fond of capturing the row of historical wine barrels found in the cellar.
The lighthearted study was accompanied by a more stringent study of wine tourism, with Google searches for ‘wine holiday’ and ‘vineyard tours’ up 22 per cent and 50 per cent, respectively, in the past 12 months.
Analysing wine ratings from Vivino, the world’s largest wine marketplace and review website, the team at CV Villas determined the best holiday destinations by looking at the top 50 red, white, rosé, and sparkling wines and cross-referencing these with the region they were from and their average score.
The Adelaide Hills struck again in this section, ranked 19 of the 20 highest-rated regions in the world. No surprises in the top three, with Champagne way ahead with a score of 188.3, Provence coming in second with 72.7, and Napa Valley nabbing third with a respectable 41.2.
Pete Brudenell, General Manager of CV Villas said: “We all know Champagne produces outstanding world-class sparkling wine, from Dom Pérignon to the more affordable Taittinger. It is an area synonymous with luxurious bottles of bubbles; however, we wanted to show people how many other locations around the world are also producing great quality tipples whilst offering stunning scenery, too."
