With 27 per cent of the carbon emissions in winemaking resulting from glass bottle production and a further 13 per cent attributed to the shipping of that glass, Central Otago winemaking brothers, James and Matt Dicey have returned to the box.
The duo renamed and relaunched their wine brand, Dicey in 2020 and are now packaging their Otago premium Pinot Noirs in a 'bag-in-a-box'.
With the arrival of Dice by Dicey Pinot Noir, the winemakers say that the days of cask wine being lower grade are done with.
Matt Dicey (pictured below) says that he and his brother are consciously bucking the trend.
“A better way to buy wine shouldn’t mean you compromise on quality,” he says.
While not perfect, Dicey says that the bag-in-box packaging is a far better proposition for the environment.
"You can’t wait until it’s perfect. You have to get started with the technology that’s available now. It starts a conversation, gathers some momentum and means we’ll be ready to make improvements as the tech does get better," he says.
“The wine in the Dice has been made with the same care and focus that we give to all our wines.
Made with certified organic grapes or sustainably certified, the wine was fermented in small format open top tanks, with 20 per cent whole bunch usage, aged in French oak barrels with 16 per cent new wood.
The packaging format also means that the wine stays vibrant far longer than a conventional glass bottle once opened.
“The wine will stay fresh when opened for three to four weeks in this format” explains Matt, “meaning you can take your time and savour it.”
There are 2.65 bottles in each Dicey Dice 2 litre box which retails for $110. Pre-sales for the product and trade enquiries can be made here.
