Meikle Tòir: GlenAllachie’s new Speyside peated whisky brand

GlenAllachie has announced the launch of its new Meikle Tòir (pronounced mee-kuhl tor) brand. The collection features four small-batch SKUs: The Original, The Sherry One, The Chinquapin, and The Turbo. Each of the four is made in Speyside using premium mainland peat, resulting in an oaky, sweet smoke style.

It is also the first time that the GlenAllachie Distillery has produced a peated single malt whisky under current Master Distiller, BIlly Walker.

“This is an incredibly exciting milestone for all of us at The GlenAllachie,” said Walker.

“Five years in the making, Meikle Tòir represents our endeavours to perfect a peated whisky and make history at our home in Speyside.”

The four whiskies vary primarily based on the barrels used. The Sherry One and The Chinquapin are both bottled at 48% abv and retail at $135 and The Original and The Turbo are bottled at 50% abv and retail at $145.

Meikle Tòir will be available in Australia exclusively from March via Vanguard Luxury Brands.

DEWAR’s Double Double 21 Year Old Mizunara Oak Cask Finish

DEWAR’s latest iteration of its esteemed Double Double series captures and blends together the essences and traditions of two of whisky’s most important and distinctive distilling cultures: Japan and Scotland.

It has achieved this by finishing the 21 year old whisky in Japanese Mizunara oak casks. Unlike American oak, Mizunara requires over 200 years to reach maturity. It also doesn’t grow straight, posing a unique challenge for coopers. For DEWAR’s, however, it was deemed a necessary challenge due to the unique flavour profile of sandalwood and coconut that it tends to impart.

DEWAR’s Double Double 21 Year Old Mizunara Oak Cask Finish has already received significant accolades such as being ranked seventh in Whisky Advocate’s list of Most Exciting Whiskies of 2023 with a rating of 95.
