Retailers have found a new opportunity to boost wine sales through the online buy and sell platform eBay.

Over the last year, 250 retailers sold wine via the website including Dan Murphy’s, Garnet Cellar, McLaren Vale Cellars, Boutique Cellar and Oak Road Estate.

The category has grown year on year since it was added to the site, with sales volume up by 243 per cent.

“It’s a really exciting time for small winemakers and distributors as the buying behaviours of Australians shift towards online wine purchases," eBay commented.

“Where their sales were previously limited to buyers in their local area or who stumbled across their cellar door, they can suddenly find new customers in every corner of Australia.”

David Short, founder of wine.com.au, has been selling wine on eBay since November 2016 and says the website is now a key channel for his business.

“eBay not only supports our website but is key to driving sales during promotional periods,” Short explained.

“We’ve seen strong growth in Aussie culture for the vintage Champagne category in addition to an increased appreciation for iconic Australian brands such as Penfolds and Henschke.”

eBay says there is still scope for other retailers, wineries and distributors to tap into its growing community, with the number of those selling wine on its website still relatively small.

Over 11 million shoppers visited the website last year, with one in two making a purchase. Stats show there are also users from over 21 countries interested in buying Australian wine from sellers on eBay.
