Rosés and sparkling wines proved on-trend this year, with a 52 per cent increase in the entries of these wines at the 2016 Sydney International Wine Competition.
New Zealand’s The Ned Pinot Rosé took out the Trophy for Best Still Rosé Wine, and Clover Hill Tasmanian Cuvée NV Rosé the Trophy for Best Australian Sparkling Wine. The debut Pink by Design 2016 Rosé, produced by TV celebrity Graham Norton and Invite Wines, was also awarded a Blue Gold Medal.
A total of 1911 wines were judged from eight countries this year, with a total of 290 wines awarded Top 100, Blue Gold and Gold medals, including 26 Trophy winners. The international panel of 14 judges was led by Kym Milne MW, who also praised the lighter-bodied wines this year, as well as the diversity of the entries.
“The Lighter Bodied Whites class proved to be one of the more interesting and varied of all the classes in terms of results,” said Milne.
“The Top 100 & Blue Gold categories feature wines made from Pinot Gris, Viognier from New Zealand, as well as Semillon, Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc blends, Vermentino, Gruner Veltliner, Chardonnay and a very good Italian white blend all from a wide variety of Australian regions and climates.
“Add to this list an Albarino from the Rias Baixas region of Spain and there is a lot of fascinating quality wines available to the consumer to choose from.”
France dominated the Sparkling Wines class, winning six of the ten wines in the Top 100 and Blue Gold categories.
Among the varietals, New Zealand once again dominated the whites, and Australia held influence over the medium and full-bodied red categories. International wines featured medals across the competition.
Marlborough proved the most successful wine region, winning 59 awards.
Public tastings of the award winners will be held at the Novotel Sydney Central hotel on February 11 2017. Full details of winners can be found at www.top100wines.com.
