the drinks association is saddened to learn of the passing of Philip Murphy.
Philip, the son of iconic wine merchant Dan Murphy, died after a long battle with cancer. He was first diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2010.
Philip famously feuded with his father in the 1980s and established a rival drinks retail business - Philip Murphy Wines & Spirits - which he later sold to Coles.
After retiring from wine retailing, Philip completed his Bachelor of Wine Science degree at Charles Sturt University and became a winemaker with his eponymous Philip Murphy Estate label, situated on the Mornington Peninsula in Southern Victoria.
Philip noted to Executive Style that the move was something his father Dan never contemplated. ''He'd be amazed,'' he said. ''He always saw me as the son who didn't know anything.''
Philip's mate Gary Steele told daily drinks the pair shared a love of good wine during their 30-year friendship.
"He was a good human being and an honourable man, who was loved and respected in the drinks industry," Gary said.
The family has decided not to hold a funeral for Murphy, but a farewell drink for his many friends is being held from 5pm on Thursday, March 23, at the Flying Duck, in Prahran.
An invitation to everyone who would like to raise a glass to "Murph" has been extended for the event.
Our deepest condolences go out to Philip's wife Jennifer and his family.
