Aussie whisky Starward has scooped another international accolade, winning Gold at The 4th Annual Berlin International Spirits Competition and being named Australian Whisky of the Year.
Almost 400 spirits from more than 20 countries from around the world were judged by a trade-only panel.
The Berlin International Spirits Competition is part of the International Beverage Competition Group, which also includes the New York International Spirits Competition and the Melbourne International Spirits Competition.
Diageo's Distill Ventures invested an undisclosed sum to become a minority stakeholder in Staward last year.
David Gates, Diageo’s global head of premium core spirits, said: “Australian whisky has rightly been gaining increasing global recognition recently and Starward has developed a uniquely positioned whisky to capture this opportunity.”
Starward founder David Vitale told Whisky Wash: "The dream has always been to create a distinctively Australian whisky we can take to the world with pride. With these recent investments, we can make that happen.
"Starward has always been an ambitious undertaking. We see an extremely bright future. We plan to continue to do what we are doing now, but on a grander scale. My dream, is to do to whisky what Australian wine has done to wine, and be a credible alternative to traditional whiskies from around the world."
