Sydney has been crowned the most expensive city in the world to buy beer at a retail outlet.
The latest Beer Price Index collected prices on local beers from supermarkets and bars in 70 cities around the world.
The BPI is researched by travel site GoEuro, which puts together price indexes on common goods tourists like to buy. Researchers at the company visited three supermarkets and three hotels in each of the cities they visited, combined the costs for each, standardised the quantity of alcohol, and converted the end number into a single currency.
GoEuro found a buying a 33cl beer at a retail outlet in Sydney costs an average of $US2.60. The figure narrowly beat out Reykjavik at $US2.57 and Oslo at $US2.54.
The cheapest city in the world to buy a supermarket beer was the Slovakian capital of Bratislava, at US51c.
When it came to bar prices, Sydney fared slightly better for affordability at $US6.73 for a 33cl beer. Bratislava was the cheapest again at $US2.80, while Lausanne, Switzerland, was the most expensive - a whopping $17.60.
Overall, Sydney came in at No.51.
