Canberra's Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier 2015 has surprised Wine Ark by being the top wine entering its cellars in 2016.

The wine storage specialist has released its inaugural “Best of” series, which provides a snapshot of the movements of wine into and out of its managed cellars nationally for 2016.

“It came as a surprise that the top wine entering the cellars in 2016 was the Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier 2015 – not due to the quality of this brilliant wine but due to its limited availability. It shows that wine collectors know a good thing when they come across it and vote with their wallets” said Cuff.

The Top 3 Wine Additions were:

1. Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier 2015

2. Lake’s Folly Cabernet 2014 (only 18 bottles behind first place!)

3. Penfolds St Henri 2012

The Top 3 Producers Added to the Cellars were:

1. Penfolds

2. Tyrrell’s

3. Rockford

The Top 3 Regions were:

1. Barossa Valley

2. Hunter Valley

3. Margaret River

The Favourite Varietals Added were:

1. Shiraz

2. Pinot Noir

3. Cabernet Sauvignon

4. Chardonnay

The oldest bottle removed from the Wine Ark managed cellars in 2016 was a 1927 Gould Cambell Douro DOC Vintage Port. The most commonly removed vintage was 2010, followed by 2009 then 2005. Surprisingly only one 50th birthday bottle of 1966 was removed – a Chateau Beau-Site from St-Estephe, Bordeaux.
