The Karalee on Preston has been crowned the winner of the 2019 WA’s Best Steak Sandwich Competition for the Perth region (above), while Settlers Tavern was declared the winner for the regional competition.
Australian Hotels Association (WA) CEO Bradley Woods said the quality of the sandwiches was constantly improving with chefs creating new masterpieces to raise the bar each year.
“While the competition is obviously a lot of fun, the steaks are high and venues quite rightly take it very seriously,” Woods said.
“The thought and effort that is taken to produce the perfect steak sandwich is incredible and reflects the dedication of the chefs that enter the competition each year.”
“We are amazed by the creations that WA chefs produce, with the real winners being local punters who get to enjoy the best steak sandwiches in the country.”
Mikey Phull is the head chef at The Karalee on Preston and is a veteran of the Perth competition, winning the title in both 2014 and 2017. His winning factor in 2019 was his signature Barbi-oli sauce and marinated scotch fillet steak.
Mitch Mitchell from Settlers Tavern in Margaret River (above) won the judges over with his bacon jam and smoked tomato chutney.
This year’s competition collected a record number of votes from Western Australians, with nearly 70 venues participating in the epic battle that stops the nation.
The WA’s Best Steak Sandwich Competition is sponsored by Lion Beer Australia, Tourism Western Australia and HiscoNFE.
