Caretaker’s Cottage, Maybe Sammy, and Byrdi were recognised as Australia’s leading venues in this year’s The World’s 50 Best Bars, placing 21st, 26th, and 40th respectively. Additionally, Caretaker’s Cottage also recently received the Michter’s Art of Hospitality Award, one of only two special awards issued ahead of this years top 50 unveiling.
“This is a very well-deserved win, and we extend our heartfelt congratulations to the entire Caretaker’s Cottage team,” said Emma Sleight, Head of Content for The World’s 50 Best Bars.
“While the drinks themselves are second to none, the authentically warm, laid-back atmosphere provides a home away from home for guests, creating an unrivalled and utterly memorable drinking experience.”
This year also saw Caretaker’s Cottage overtake Maybe Sammy as the leading Australian bar on the list, reflecting the venue’s strong rise to prominence since being opened in 2022.
“To operate Caretaker’s Cottage in Melbourne, and to host people in our tiny pub from all over the world, is truly the greatest honour,” said Co-Founders Rob Libecans, Ryan Noreiks and Matt Stirling in a joint statement.
“We’re so proud to have created a fun and inclusive environment that guests enjoy as much as we do. We can’t wait to share the news with everyone, as this award wouldn’t have been possible without our community.”
This year also saw Maybe Sammy make the top 50 list for a sixth consecutive year, a consistency never before achieved by any Australian venue. Byrdi, the third-placed Australian venue, made its first appearance into the top 50 after placing 61st in last year’s competition. Byrdi’s Head Bartender Luke Whearty also made this year's T25 Top Bartenders list, as voted by fellow Australian bar professionals.
The global winner for The World’s 50 Best Bars 2024 was Mexico City’s Handshake Speakeasy.
“To be the first ever number one from Mexico is an outstanding achievement, of which Eric van Beek and his team are hugely deserving,” said Emma Sleight.
“The bar’s impressive rise through the list of The World’s 50 Best Bars over the years is a testament to their unique combination of flawless hospitality, innovative technique and truly excellent cocktails. We also extend our heartfelt congratulations to each and every bar on this year’s list, which once again highlights the incredible diversity of the global bar sector.”
In addition to Mexico City, Melbourne and Sydney, 25 other cities from around the world made the Top 50 list, which was presented last night at a live awards ceremony in Madrid, Spain.
