Adelaide Hills-based wine producer, The Other Wine Co, has welcomed Matt Large as Chief Winemaker. Coming on board with extensive experience in a variety of regions here and overseas, including Macedon Ranges, Central Otago and Piedmont, The Other Wine Co’s continued ambition to think outside the box and create truly delicious wines looks promising.

Making the move west after five years with Shadowfax Winery in the Macedon Ranges, Large is currently overseeing his first vintage at The Other Wine Co, focusing on sustainable viticulture and working with the team to look closely at other regions, other varieties and other styles that will continue to make this brand an exciting one.

“Having the ability to work on such amazing vineyards and on new projects where experimentation is encouraged is fantastic. I’ve loved seeing the fruit from different vineyards come through and have enjoyed being involved from the very start of vintage,” Large said.

Large’s first release will be the 2021 Pinot Gris and looking ahead, he will focus his attention on both existing wines and new varieties, honing in on ‘the other’ part of The Other Wine Co. “Otherness can be found in many different forms – an unsung vineyard, an alternate grape variety or a different winemaking technique,” he said.

“We are really excited to have Matt on board to lead The Other Wine Co team, as well as work across Shaw + Smith and Tolpuddle. He has some cracking experience, particularly in cooler climates, that will really drive the wines to a new place and bring fresh insights” said Adam Wadewitz, Chief Winemaker and Joint CEO of Shaw + Smith.

The Other Wine Co wines include an Adelaide Hills Pinot Gris and Shiraz, Blewitt Spings Grenache, and Ricca Terra Farms Arinto. The Other Wine Co aims to showcase different places, varieties, and experimental styles, underpinned by Shaw + Smith’s winemaking excellence and attention to detail.
