Woodford Reserve Double Oaked is the only whiskey in the world that has been matured and finished in two separate and distinct barrels, created at the Woodford Reserve cooperage.
“Maturation in a new, charred oak barrel provides Woodford Reserve with all of its natural colour and a great deal of its award-winning flavour. This Double Oaked expression has been uniquely matured in two separate, custom crafted barrels with the second deeply toasted before its light charring,” Woodford Reserve's Master Distiller, Chris Morris said. “The second barreling of mature Woodford Reserve in this unique barrel allows the spirit to extract an additional amount of soft, sweet oak character.”
The first barrel is made from oak that has spent nine months outdoors and is toasted and charred on the inside. The second barrel is toasted for more than double the time as the first fill barrel and then very lightly charred. The secret to the Double Oaked character is in the second barrel; a custom crafted barrel with a heavier toast allows flavours of honey, cream, and vanilla to be magnified and a light char gives elegant sweet aromatic notes.
