Cellarspace is offering the world's only 12 litre bottle of Grange for sale.
Cellarpsace is a wine marketplace where wine lovers can buy, value and sell their wines. Its founder Darren Campbell said it's a very special moment for the business.
“To be selected to act on behalf of the owner is a great privilege," he said. "Items like this are so rare and we cannot wait to see this piece of wine history placed into another remarkable cellar."
The bottle was the brainchild of one of Australia's most celebrated wine merchants, the late Doug Crittenden (pictured below). In 2007, Crittenden convinced Penfolds to decant 16 bottles of the 1997 Grange vintage into a single 12-litre bottle, which was then sold to the highest bidder to raise funds for cancer research, a cause very close to his heart.
The 12-litre bottle was purchased by a Melbourne hotelier and has remained in his keeping under perfect cellar conditions ever since. The hotelier now wants to offer this one of a kind opportunity to the broader market.
It is the only 12 litre Grange ever made and is truly unique.
In recent years, Grange limited release ampules and six litre St.Louis decanters have sold for more than $150,000 each. While it's impossible to predict what the 12-litre bottle will fetch, Cellarspace said it should be treated in a similar vein to the more recent limited release opportunities.
The 1997 Grange Vintage is made predominantly from Shiraz (96%) with a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon (4%) added. It has a magnificent nose with aroma of vanilla confectionary, violets and spice, almost perfumed. The palate flavours are very concentrated, with dark chocolate, spice, ripe plum, mocha and vanilla over a very peppery background. It has outstanding length and depth and the aftertaste lasts for several minutes with plum, mocha and liquorice evident.
Cellarspace is inviting registrations of interest via email and price on application will strictly apply.
