Wynns Coonawarra Estate has today launched its Wynnsday collection, a collection that best exemplifies the Terra Rossa Coonawarra soils and vintages in which each wine was made.
The 2024 release includes three different expressions of Shiraz, two expressions of Cabernet Sauvignon, and one Cabernet/Shiraz blend. The two most premium releases, the Wynns Michael Shiraz and the Wynns Messenger Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, were both made from grapes harvested during the 2021 vintage, with the remaining four heralding from the following year.
According to Wynns' Senior Winemaker Sue Hodder, "the 2022 vintage was a high-quality year without any obvious climate change impacts. This presented a fabulous opportunity for Sarah, Chris and I to truly bring our creative winemaking style and flair to the fore.”
Named after David Wynn’s son, the Wynns Michael Shiraz 2021 is Wynns Coonawarra Estate’s flagship Shiraz expression and is only made in years in the best vintages. A true legend of the Australian wine story, each bottle retails for $149.99.
Following the Michael is the Wynns Messenger Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2021. Every year, Wynns selects a single parcel from a single vineyard to bottle under this label. In 2021, the same southern section of the Terra Rossa strip used for 2010 and 2015 vintages was selected. Wynns Messenger retails for $79.99 per bottle.
Released as part of Wynns’ Black Label is the Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 and the ‘Old Vines’ Shiraz 2022, both at $45 a bottle. First produced in 1954, the Black Label Cabernet has a reputation for ageing gracefully and displaying great varietal and regional typicity. The Black Label Shiraz also has a key role in the history of the Wynns, dating right back to the 1890s when Coonawarra started developing a reputation for Cab/Shiraz blends. Expect a medium-bodied, fine and silky style.
The final two releases are the Wynns V&A Lane Shiraz and the V&A Lane Cabernet Shiraz. Deriving its name from one of the most renowned portions of the Terra Rossa strip, Wynns’ V&A Lane parcels tend to be the first picked each season, resulting in a more modern fresh and spicy appeal. Wynns enhances this profile by employing winemaking techniques such as whole bunch, wild ferment, and larger format oak.
“The 2024 Wynnsday Collection truly is one of the best range of wines that we have released in my time at Wynns. In over three decades at Wynns, I have seen some very fine wines produced, but this year’s release wines are well and truly amongst that group,” said Hodder.
The 2024 Wynnsday Collection is available from www.wynns.com and fine wine retailers across Australia.
Wynns’ John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 will also be available in Australia from September onwards as well as on La Place.
