Little Lonsdale Street's Caretakers Cottage in Melbourne has made the top 100 list of the World's Best Bars list for the first time, ranking 60th, while Sydney's RE: has been ranked 87th. The news precedes the announcement of the World's Best 50 Bars which will be made in Barcelona on Monday, 4 October.

It's been a busy time for RE's Matt Whiley who was also a top 4 finalist in the Spirited Awards hosted in New Orleans in July and whose sustainable bartending workshops were a highlight of Diageo's World Class Festival earlier this month. Whiley is en route to Barcelona as part of the festival events coinciding with the World's 50 Best Bars announcement.

Last year Maybe Sammy was the top ranking Australian bar placing 22nd, followed by Cantina OK! at 23. RE was ranked 46th and was also awarded The Ketel One Sustainable Bar Award. Melbourne's Above Board ranked 44 and Byrdi ranked 56.

The World's Best 50 Bars list is compiled by votes from The World’s 50 Best Bars Academy, made up of more than 650 drinks experts with 50/50 gender parity, including renowned bartenders and consultants, drinks writers and cocktail specialists spread across 28 global geographic regions.

Each voter casts seven votes based on their best bar experiences of the previous 18 months, although if they have been unable to travel, they are welcome to provide five votes from their home country or SAR. Voters are required to remain anonymous and voting is confidential, secure and independently adjudicated by Deloitte.

Stay tuned next week for the new from Barcelona!
