Melbourne Rye Whiskey distillery, The Gospel, have released Tawny Cask, the first release from their ongoing project series.
Andrew Fitzgerald, Co-Founder of The Gospel, said “We are doing three to six special releases of small batches each year where we use different grain or cask. It is part of us trialling different things in the distillery and releasing things that we think taste delicious and the whiskey lovers will enjoy.”
For this special Project Release, The Gospel chose a barrel sourced from a family operated winery in the Barossa - Dutschke Wines. The history of the cask is crucial to The Gospel, whether it's the forest where the oak is sourced or, in the case of their second fill barrels, the producer that previously filled it.
The cask for Tawny Cask was also used to age Dutschke Wines’ 9 year old Tawny Fortified Wine and was delivered to The Gospel fresh, without re-coopering. The cask was filled with mature Straight Rye Whiskey and allowed to mellow for a further 4 months. The end result is a deliciously well-balanced whiskey that envelopes the spice of The Gospel Straight Rye with the rich sweetness of the Tawny, best enjoyed over the Christmas period.
The release is limited to 558 bottles and retails for $130, well below other limited whiskey releases from Australia.
“We make whiskey to drink and enjoy and although this release is very special, we wanted it to remain affordable," said Fitzgerald.
In-store now, the release will join the brand’s core range, Solera Rye and Straight Rye Whiskey. The project series follows their sold out first Single Cask Release, Barrel #35.
